Custom tote bags are often treated as a blank bag with a logo added. In a made-to-order project, almost every part of the bag is a decision. Knowing what those decisions are makes it easier to describe the product you actually want.
Material is the first choice because it affects appearance, structure, and how artwork reproduces. Within a single material family you can also specify a lighter or heavier fabric, which changes how the bag feels and how well it holds its shape. Material comparisons are covered in more detail in canvas vs cotton.
Width, height, and depth are all specified. A gusseted base gives volume for boxed contents; a flat bag suits documents and printed materials. Handle length determines whether the bag is carried by hand or over the shoulder.
Bags can be produced in a natural, undyed fabric or in a specified colour. Colour applies to the body, and can differ for handles, linings, or trim where the construction allows it. Fabric colour and printed colour are separate decisions and both should be recorded in the specification.
- Self-fabric handles cut from the same material as the body
- Webbing or tape handles for a different texture and feel
- Short hand-carry length or longer shoulder-carry length
- Attachment and reinforcement method at the handle join
Branding covers placement, size, number of print positions, and colours. A single-colour logo on one side is the most common request; full-width artwork, back printing, or a repeated pattern are all possible depending on material and method.
Inside the bag you can specify an internal pocket, a divider, a lining, or a closure such as a snap or zip, depending on the model. These affect both usability and cost, so include them in the brief rather than adding them after quotation.
Woven or printed labels, care or content labels, hangtags, and edge or seam finishing all contribute to how finished the bag looks. For retail projects these details often matter as much as the print.
How the bags are folded, bundled, and packed can be specified too — for example individual polybags for retail distribution, or bulk cartons for a single delivery point.
The full list of options is set out on the customization page, and the sequence in which they are confirmed is described in the manufacturing process.
